Project Overview
This 1 month individual project was done for a senior design course at Simon Fraser University. The project entailed choosing a platform and adding a feature and so I chose AllTrails and designed a trail planning feature on their mobile app to give users more control on their outdoor activities.
My Impact
As this was an individual project, I conducted research for pain points, brainstormed designs, created wireframes on Figma, and prototyped the feature on ProtoPie.
Pain Points
After doing some research, I discovered a common theme of the lack of customization in AllTrail’s current interface. Some of these were reviews and even compared the app to other competitors.

Brainstorming
I sketched a rough idea of how the feature would look and how visible this feature should be for users. I also thought it would be helpful to see some statistics like estimated trail time and how long it would be.

Feedback
The teaching team recommended this feature being put to use through a scenario and how an active hiker would use this feature before going on the trail. Keeping a scenario in mind, I implemented the feedback and used it in my final design.
Final Solution
The route planning feature in AllTrails allows users to plan their outdoor activities with ease as they can use their fingers to drag across a trail towards the route they plan to take. Along with an arrow to indicate the route, this feature gives some statistics that may be helpful such as estimated time and length.
Reflection
This 1-month project allowed me to analyze an existing app interface and identify design opportunities for improvement. By focusing on the pain points of AllTrails, I was able to hone my research skills while discovering areas to implement my own ideas, even within a well-functioning interface. Working independently throughout the project strengthened my ability to conduct thorough research, giving me greater confidence and preparation for future team collaborations.
